Businessing checklist

WHEN LOOKING FOR PLACES TO EXHIBIT

  • be friendly, open, interested in the art already there and their main asset
  • look for holes: where could you put your work physically, and what type of work should it be?
  • talk about pricing straight away
  • remember it's for them, not you. you won't be looking at it every day of the week, 9 to 5

WHEN TALKING PRICES
  • don't sell out
  • charge for materials used
  • charge 15$ and hour for baby stuff, 25$ an hour for average stuff, 50$ an hour for pro stuff
  • write it down so you remember what you agreed on

WHEN CREATING THE ART
  • keep the peoples informed (email, tumblr, etc)
  • keep tabs on materials used+cost, hours worked
  • use good quality stuff
  • test everything. twice

WHEN FINISHING THE ART
  • varnish if you can
    • 3 coats
    • stir, don't mix
    • create tent to avoid dust particles floating in
    • bubbles... try to get rid of them... somehow...
  • ensure the sides are presentable (paint and varnish)

WHEN BRINGING THE ART OVER/ FINISHING THE TRANSACTION

  • cover it up properly so it doesn't get damaged or dirty
  • ask for a receipt
  • leave a stack of business cards
  • chat and be friendly

WHEN BEING AN ARTIST
  • don't be a snob
  • be visible
  • always have your business card handy
