Earth day and buttons

Finished the digital painting of Dawn. Looks a bit out-dated but I'm sure with a bit more practice I'll be able to adjust the style to be a little more contemporary.

Painted a watercolor for Earth Day (not that that was the original intention). The image had managed to stay in my head for a few days and I finally got around to it. Started around 9am and finished about 11:30. Would like to be more smooth with watery applications and make less of a mess on white surfaces.

Cham died 5 years ago today. My mind is with the flying dogs.

Also, creating a series of buttons for Otakuthon. I have a lot of Miyazaki characters down- I think they'll be plenty popular. Not many search results offered similar results.

New ideas

Started sketching this up entirely on the computer. My eyes went cross and my hand went numb working for so long on this. Had to take a few days to finish it. Still struggling with the background though. Not sure how to do those Sailor Moon effects I want.

Needed Dawn to be empowered by something. Like a superhero. Then I thought about art.

So here's the plan. Empower through art. Gender unidentification.
  • A series of 12 digital paintings with each a completely different color set, all widescreen (portrait or landscape)
  • Game of Thrones logo buttons
  • Sticker portraits (of different shapes) of celebrities known for crossing the perceived gender line
  • A series of 10 watercolor paintings to add to a portfolio- all 8 by 10
All this going to Otakuthon for the year 2016

Also, I need a little thank you note/ gift for TCAF people... if I go...

I discovered a new website to get a campaign started: Indiegogo.com
It seems these are getting more and more popular...

Fear and solutions

I spent hours looking through deviantart and pinterest, hoping an answer would come through to me. I hoped I could copy what was already there, start from scratch again... but to no avail.

I clicked the (x) on the Chrome window and, thinking this might be harder than I thought, had a sudden flash of inspiration. It seems that the real art comes from the pencil itself and not the steps beforehand.

This is what came of it:
I thoroughly enjoyed adding the white on top of the watercolor. I used a "galaxy marker", very properly suited for that name.

Then, in bed, I had such flashes of images that I couldn't get to sleep. And I realized: comics is what I was meant to do.

I have no idea how to finance it yet, or how to get a growing fan-base, but I'm convinced that this is the path for me to take, at least for now...

Words like rain

Drew Dawn D yesterday, getting rained on by negative thoughts. I've been feeling like I'm not ready to move on. Lately, I get anxious and uncomfortable to the point of near-panic when I hear someone talking about teaching. It's difficult to understand that not everyone has had such a negative experience as mine, mostly because of the way that I was affected by it- intensely and deeply.
But... how do you get over 3 years of trauma?

I've also discovered this Go Fund Me website that, I suppose, works a bit like Kickstarter and Patreon with no specific theme except to raise money.

Character size... and a gift!

Drew Dawn D and noticed a severe lack of proportions and consistency. So I calculated a bit.

I also decided Dawn doesn't need eyes. Glasses tell all. And besides, looking onto people's eyes is scary.

In other news, I was on the metro today, drawing people, and a kid got really interested in who I was choosing to draw, so I drew a quick sketch of this kid's parent, and then gave it away to them. It was a magical moment where everyone felt special... :)

A note on Warm-ups

Takes a while to get sufficiently warmed up to draw properly without it being an effort. Now I know why the art classes at Concordia were all 4 hours long...

Here's a sample of expressions that I drew. The corner one is the first I drew, then went down, and then came back up to go all the way to the right. You can pretty much tell that they get more and more fluid and consistent.

Should be completing this chart within the next few days.
